Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that is often used to improve the appearance of skin, especially on the face.

It has been shown to effectively treat acne scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, age spots, and uneven skin tone. In general, this treatment involves making small pin-pricks in the affected region to stimulate collagen production.

What To Expect

Prior to the treatment, the patient should discontinue certain topical and internal medications. Approximately an hour before the treatment, the clinician will apply a topical anesthetic to the area to reduce pain. Then the clinician will begin making pin-pricks using a small pin. These pricks are usually so small that they can’t be seen after the treatment. This pricking will continue for about half an hour to an hour, depending on the area of the skin being treated.

After the treatment, many people feel well enough to return to school or work. However, the skin will likely be red and more sensitive than usual in the days following the procedure. Sunscreen should be utilized to protect the skin as it rejuvenates, and concealer can be applied to mask any redness. After about two weeks the redness should fade, scarring should be reduced, and the skin usually appears more even and bright. It is common for this procedure to need to be repeated a few times, usually three to six, to obtain desired results.

Use of Micro-Needling

Treatment of acne scars is the most common reason that people seek out micro-needling. However, it can also be used to improve the appearance of stretch marks. Micro-needling can also improve cosmetic appearances by reducing the visibility of age spots and uneven skin tones. In general, people report that their skin appears younger and brighter following micro-needling. This is because through time acne and the sun damage skin. Meanwhile, collagen production tends to slow down as we age, which decreases our skin’s ability to rejuvenate. This decrease in collagen can also contribute to wrinkles and fine lines. Therefore, stimulating collagen production through micro-needling also reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
