A common reason to have laser vein treatment is to deal with unsightly or painful varicose veins. While many patients are pleased with the results from this type of treatment, problematic veins could always return. Genetics, obesity, and pregnancy are among the factors that can affect veins and the odds of experiencing varicose vein recurrence after laser treatment. Put the odds back in your favor by adding the following vein-friendly foods to your diet.
Blackberries, Blueberries, and Rutin-Containing Foods
Blackberries and blueberries have a high antioxidant content that helps strengthen veins. Blackberries are especially good for veins because they contain rutin, a plant pigment (flavonoid) that provides added protection against clotting. Rutin also eases the permeability of capillaries – which may further reduce the risk of new varicose veins developing after laser vein treatment. Rutin can also be found in the following “vein-friendly” foods:
- Cherries, grapes, and apricots
- Apples (unpeeled)
- Buckwheat and asparagus
- Green tea and elderflower tea
Ginger and Rosemary
This “super food” has known anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective varicose vein deterrent. Ginger may also dissolve a protein involved with the clotting process known as fibrin. This protein is what typically causes affected veins to become lumpy and hard. If you have a history of issues with varicose veins, upping your intake of ginger may keep your veins functioning normally. Rosemary is a good protective perennial herb because of the rosmarinic acid that minimizes free radical damage. It also helps prevent varicose veins by improving circulation.
Watercress
Dating back to 400 BC, watercress has long-been associated with numerous health-related perks. This leafy green aquatic plant also has a history of being used as an herbal medicine to treat varicose veins. Often used for salads and sandwiches, watercress has an abundance of nutrients that are good for veins, including calcium, manganese, and vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, E, and K.
Beets
A chemical in beetroot (beets) known as betacyanin reduces the levels of an amino acid called homocysteine that’s associated with blood vessel damage. This richly colored vegetable is also beneficial because of an abundance of nitrates that improve circulation and open blood vessels.
Shedding a few pounds can also take pressure off of veins and further reduce your chances of having varicose vein issues after having laser vein treatment. Avoiding prolonged periods of sitting, getting regular exercise, and staying away from clothing that’s too tight or constrictive in areas where you previously had vein issues are some additional steps you can take to improve circulation and keep your veins healthy.
